And, uh, age discrimination could get you sued.

Marlene Chism

Workers in their late 40's or early 50's have learned life lessons and have developed character qualities such as honesty, integrity, attitude and discipline. You can teach skills but character is within. Always hire for character first.

This short post is so "right on". Let me add one other consideration that was supported by a poll conducted conducted by Workforce50.com at last fall's AARP's national conference. The vast majority of job seekers over 64 were interested in part time work. Consider the 4 reasons listed in the post plus the ability to hire these individuals on a part-time basis, provides employers with a valuable asset. Generally a very positive return on their investment.

What does character qualities such as honesty, integrity, attitude and discipline have to do with age? Many of my 20 and 30 something's have more character than my older employees. I'm a little confused about that one.

The article itself was helpful.

How do employers deal with the extra cost of health benefits for full time over 60 employees. Do they pay them less?

Jennifer

Thanks for the question. According to The Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967, you can’t discriminate against age and you can’t pay them less because of their age to compensate for benefits. This act protects individuals 40 years and older from discrimination against any term, condition or privilege of employment – this includes benefits and health care.

Thanks,
Jennifer
